Met Assignment

The Metropolitan Museum Trip Assignment:

Painting: Lucian Freud. British, born in Germany, 1922-2011

I was drawn to this particular painting because it is an odd composition of a nude man. It shows a rather plump male who‘s back is faced to the viewer. Because his back is faced to the viewer, it makes the painting that much more intriguing. I begin to want to discover more about this man. Things such as why he’s turned away. Is he sad, lonely, annoyed, or even anger? All of these questions come to mind as I try to analyze it more. I came up with my own conclusion about the man and I concluded that the man is trying to hide something that he values very much for fear of someone taking it from him. Notice in the painting how his head isn’t completely faced down and slightly turned almost trying to keep his focus on what’s in front of him and wants behind him.

Painting : David Hockney. British, born 1937. Large Interior, Los Angles, 1988. Oil and ink on cut-and pasted paper on canvas.

I really like this painting for so many reasons. For one, it’s very abstract and the colors really make the painting pop! Secondly, the different variety of shapes and designs really highlight the structure of the area. And thirdly, it’s a design painting for the interior of a living room. It’s cool because Interior Design is something that I love and want to major in and I was happy that instead of the design being structured, it was corky and cool. The story that I think is presented within the painting is a person of modern style appreciates the eccentric things in life.

Comparison between both paintings: I believe that the comparison between the two is the uniqueness it has. They both are not like your average paintings. One tells a story and the other has a corky design but together the style choice represents the artist personality.
